I hear ya, SonicCube…I’m an artist as well.

I knew I’d annoy people by failing to mention that I’m not looking to discover new artists (just rounding out my classics collection)...but I was sparing the personal details.

I would gladly pay $5/track to an artist who is completely independent or is with a small, ethical label.

But when it comes to the big biz music industry or Apple…both of whom put their bottom lines WAY above consumers’ needs or experience (for example, DRM !)...I have little interest in supporting their broken business models.

So it’s in that way that I don’t have a problem paying pennies on the dollar for an album that has been around for 50 years, gone multi-platinum, and all the artists/execs associated have been thrown their bags of money.

With Spotify you don’t have to download any thing except the program, it’s available both on my computer and on my iPhone and in some cases, when the digital tv box supports it, also on the tv. I’m glad I don’t need to have 10,000 mp3s locally on my computer any more.

Ah…I hadn’t even considered the idea of a completely virtual collection…a cloud collection. Will check it out to see if I could budget such a thing.

That would definitely be worth checking into. Unlike Apple, Google is a company that actually cares about the end user’s experience more than their money (yes, I’m a bitter Flash guy)...now if Google could only incorporate Apple’s design prowess they’d acheive perfection!

Have you tried Spotify? It’s a subscription service as well. You can buy mp3 through the associated mp3 store. I mainly use it for streaming though. Works on the go as well as iPhone, Android and (I think) BlackBerry app. A vast catalogue of music.

I think eMusic is a great service and I’ve subscribed in the past. Better for discovering music, though…I guess I’m looking to beef up the classics and standards in my collection.

I use the microsoft zune marketplace, $15 a month to download and listen to anything in their library which is quite large but obviously doesn’t have EVERYTHING . Im pretty happy with their service and very rarely am I unable to find what I want there.

I wasn’t aware of that. Microsoft sucks as software developers but I’m willing to give them a chance in this area. Thanks!

Been looking around for alternatives to Amazon and iTunes. Both are too expensive ($1/track is just ridiculous) and iTunes doesn’t even tell you what kind of file you are getting before you buy!

I’m seeing that there are a lot of Russian sites, like AllOfMP3 and Lavamus, that are essentially criminal enterprises…so I don’t want to support “rip and share” crap…or P2P .

Does a store exist that offers MP3s that are…

• solidly legal
• reasonably priced
• high quality (over 192 preferably)
• available for most standard artists from ACDC to Zeppelin (unlike eMusic)

Or is that just silliness?
