If you use WordPress to post photos and updates, you could password protect the site with any number of plug-ins like this:

I’ve gone both routes in my themes and custom sites and haven’t heard a complaint against either method / style.

As long as it’s simple to use and understand for all user levels, I don’t think it’s a huge deal.
