I have noticed that a few people are adding their own watermark to vector files and icon files. I am not quite sure if this should be allowed to continue it doesn’t really go very well with the websites overall appearance, and may turn some buyers off if they are used to seeing the normal watermark and suddenly find something totally different.

I really don’t think that adding your own water mark is such a big deal. I have seen some good preview images that have a nice water mark, one that does not spoil the beauty of the image but still adds a mark to it. It is advisable for icons, as they can be small and some of them may not be covered completely by the default water mark. It Is Up To You To Decide whether to use water mark or not.

Well the thing is, no items should be accepted unless they are using the standard Envato watermark. While I’m sure authors can come up with watermarks that work better with their design, the rules state that authors use the Envato watermark. I’m sure in an area like general design, the staff will eventually provide a few watermarks that could be used, because each design is different. But if you are creating a design to be submitted, use the Envato watermark.

As Mark said, GraphicRiver doesn’t permit users to create their own watermarks—you have to use the standard Envato watermarks. We have quite the range of designs and image types here, but our team’s working on providing some watermarking options to fit specific design needs.

I think users are only doing this because the envato watermark does not currently work with images that are light. So in order to protect their work, authors have been adding their own watermark. 99% of the time, the regular envato watermark is working great. But as Amanda says, a solution to watermark lighter previews is in the works, awesome! :)

Hi guys, We now have two watermarks (one for light files and one for dark) that we now consider to adequately protect copyright. See examples of these here and here.

This should solve any issue that meant authors felt they needed to watermark their own files. Amanda let me know there was a glitch where a few got through in the review process (perils of beta)! If that happened to you, we’ll be writing to each one of you requesting you update the file so we can use the default watermark. Our sincere apologies for the confusion!

So to clarify, watermarking by authors is not allowed.

The only exception is for icons – where we do allow authors to add a watermark in. This is because icons are small enough that we believe it prudent to give authors an added way to protect their work. The only acceptable extra watermark for icons is a set of 1px semi transparent lines spaced to ensure that all parts of the designs are protected.

See an example of how this works here.

I hope that helps resolve the issue! :-) I’ll check back on this thread so if there are any further watermarking issues or concerns just say the word!

cyan,
I want to clarify this issue…
Can I put back the scan-lines water mark back on my icon-set ?

Because support was contacting me with: ”...remove your watermark or the file will be pulled…”, so I removed it, and now what ?!
Thanks.

Hi Ranfirefly,

I think I can answer this one. Yes, the final verdict is that icon sets can include additional semi-transparent lines to protect the icon images. It’s the author’s choice if they want to implement this. You’re free to add this additional watermarking back in, via updating, if you like.

Again, I want to thank everyone for their patience while we cross the inevitable beta snafus and work them out. It can be frusterating to work within a beta at times, but everyone’s participation is what will make GraphicRiver a better place at launch. Y’all rock! :)

I can see why that would be a problem, yeah. but I also agree that it takes away from the site. But if someone wants something they will buy it regardless of what kind of watermark is on it.
