Bundle Question

With all respect for the hard work and quality of product here on VH, I think bundling is a great idea as long it is reasonable for both the author and buyer. It’s another great way to market your products. Besides the quality of product, being creative and innovative is always a great way to improve marketing.

Bundling is used very carefully and responsibly by Envato. The bundles pack together a lot of value and are available for a very limited time. During that limited time, they make a concerted marketing push to bring in new traffic to the site. Nevertheless, they come in for a fair amount of criticism from authors.

What Efekt is talking about here is having a permanently available bundle of his own work. This will undermine prices on an on-going basis, undermine sales of his own new logo files, force him to work much harder for the same money, drive quality authors away from the site and achieve absolutely nothing other than pointless price deflation, a lowering of his own perception of worth and bolster the ever continuing devaluation of what we motion graphic designers do.

For anyone who is a high-end motion graphic professional, making Videohive work for you financially is borderline. Right now, it’s about the potential and not the reality. For a US / European motion designer to break even with (a decent) day rate, then a $25 file that takes a week to make needs to sell around 200 times. Less than 5% of files on the Hive have more than 200 sales. You see what I’m getting at?

Many motion graphic design professionals reserve a lot of venom for sites like this and perhaps rightly so. If this sort of bundling swings pricing significantly to the downside, you can watch many quality authors vanish overnight. Too many quality authors are disappearing anyway.

Really guys – can’t you think of any better marketing strategy than just making it cheaper?
