Forgive me if this a real novice question but I’m looking to buy a new font to use in Illustrator ‘sassoon infant’ but when I come to purchase I’m given 3 format options and I havnt a clue which ones will work with illustrator.

TrueType, PostScript and Opentype are my 3 options.

I know Opentype works for both Mac and Windows and is mentioned in the Adobe illustrator help file but its ALOT more expensive so if I can use one of the other two I would rather do that. Its a couple of hundred pounds worth of investment so it’s important that I get it right.

Do TrueType and/or PostScript work with Illustrator does anyone know?

Thanks for your help in advance

OpenType is a lot more expensive because it allows for a lot more options, ligatures etc. etc. etc.

I’m not totally up to date on all the differences.

TrueType will work just fine, if you want glyphs and so on you will have to open the glyphs panel in illustrator and handpick them.

Not sure about PostScript on mac’s. PS is an adobe format, I think it’s not advised for use though. I’d go with TTF .

You should’ve bought OpenType (not sure about the price difference), but it allows you much more font-wrapping-flexibility.

To be honest, for how i will be using the font, that really doesnt matter, but thanks anyhow :)

That’s true, if the font won’t be stretched and worked-out enough, TTF is perfect to go.

TT – Illustrator Good Thread.

This was informative.

Now I know why some fonts simply won’t display/work in Illustrator!
