Do Vectors Need Their Own Marketplace?

Hey folks, as you may know I’ve been spending some time recently thinking a lot about How to Improve GraphicRiver, and one of the things that’s been suggested internally a couple of times is the idea of spinning off parts of GraphicRiver into their own marketplaces.

Historically we’ve often done this (AudioJungle and VideoHive were spin-offs from ActiveDen, and CodeCanyon from ThemeForest) and it’s always been successful as it gives sub communities the opportunity to flourish.

Now I’d been thinking that Print Templates and maybe Presentation Templates and maybe the upcoming Logo Templates, was the logical set to spin off, into some sort of template marketplace (though I don’t know what we could call it – suggestions?).

But then lately I’ve started thinking maybe it’s Vectors that needs its own marketplace. Let me explain …

Range vs Quality

One thing that we come up against a lot on the marketplaces is where to set the quality mark. And the hard thing is it’s different depending on what site you are on. I think there is a bit of a spectrum of sites, ranging from ThemeForest where it’s important to have very high quality but (relatively) few items which are heavily customizable, all the way over to PhotoDune where it’s important to have a huge range of items so that a buyer can find exactly what they need, since photos aren’t ‘customizable’ per se.

My feeling is maybe vectors is actually closer to photos, and it’s hurting us that we have such a small range. Our vector library is dwarfed by the competitors, and I must admit that as an occasional buyer myself I often end up on other sites when I can’t find what I need on GR.

Recently we’ve begun inviting more vector artists to join GraphicRiver, but when they import in large libraries, we get some unhappiness about exposure and being swamped by lots of vectors.

I was looking at Shutterstock the other day and realized they have a library of vectors in the millions! So I worry that if we start increasing the volume of vectors coming in here, will it just swamp all the rest of the site. And if that’s the case, should vectors be off on its own site which is (like PhotoDune) geared towards a search experience, and a large volume of files?

What do you all think?

Interestingly I’ve also been chatting to people on the MicrostockGroup forums and have realized that GraphicRiver apparently has a reputation for being elitist because we reject so many vectors. Who knew!

Perhaps that would be one possible solution, after all vector portfolios tend to be rather big (sometimes over 1000 of files), and have different RPI than rest of GR items.

I think a new marketplace for vector would be cool!

Not only for Vectors but also Flyers and Business Card need their own marketplace. I guess you don’t read this thread http://graphicriver.net/forums/thread/no-more-flyers/45122

Hi Collis,

A great solution would be to launch a Print Templates Marketplace instead. Many of the recent problems and concerns, such as “unfair” front page exposure, were superficially pointed out here.
