Item Rejected - Looking for feedback

Hi guys,

I’m looking for some feedback from some experienced authors here. Here is the link to the promo for my rejected item Hand-drawn.

This is a preset that gives footage a drawn effect.

As someone who has used these marketplaces extensively (check my badges), I created something that I was myself came here searching for but could not find. Most of the items I purchase is usually to extract a single element. I envisioned this as happily sitting alongside Sketch, as a cheaper option that people could use in their projects without paying full-price for a template they don’t need.

Was my mistake in that the idea/execution wasn’t good or I misunderstood the VH core audience (ie. not me but people that just want to drop in a couple of images and they are done)?

Hey njvan, I don’t quite see what you’re trying to achieve here… is it a AE template, or a preset? Does it include the book at the beginning? I think it’s an interesting look but I don’t really see this being an “item”... not sure how to say this. How would people use this?

What I see here.. is that this item has a very narrow range of usage. Plus, those assets.. Were they included in your project? Are you allowed to resell them?

And the presentation of the idea is very-very-very short.. or small.. This definitely could be improved in many different ways.

Thanks for your feedback, andrenavarre! It is a preset, so it doesn’t include the book at the beginning. For use, I saw it as useful as a transition, or for creating the “Sherlock Holmes” effect with moving footage. In fact, that is why I created it. I used it in a commercial last week.

Hi PerfectFX! Thanks for taking the time to give me your feedback – it is all appreciated! The assets are freely available stock and were linked to in the item description (stockfootageforfree.com) and weren’t packaged. I didn’t want to give the illusion that the book was included which was why I transitioned quickly to the girl full-screen to show instead what you can generate with the comp.

For the usage range, I’m sure it is no more limited to use than a shattering logo open or felt-tip’s cool Sketch project (which incidentally – I have previously purchased – unfortunately the look didn’t work for me). However the reviewer, placdarms, said the effect was weak.

If you have any specific ideas about how to improve the presentation, I would love to read them! It was my first go here, and I am always willing to defer to the voice of experience!

With a book (or an album), that is being opened, it’s a good idea to show:
1. Some memories..
2. A plan of achieveing something (why not? :D)
3. A wedding pictures (although this very video doesn’t breathe with the appropriate colors and other little stuff to represent a wedding feel.. should be slightly improved in that direction).

In general, it should be more like a story of smth I think.. But if you want it to be widely sold (that’s what we all want), this story should be on some very popular topic.. a success, a guide to something, a business plan, an idea presentation etc.

And a book like this one you have here is defintely not for a logo opener. Although, it might be used as a mix, probably..

Well.. that’s a little sketch of possible ideas

Good luck and don’t stop trying! In the end, we all fail from time to time, but the question is.. will you stand up to continue your journey?

My suggestion would be to make it into some sort of package, where you might get the preset, a few AE projects, and other elements of some sort (sound, textures, etc.) if possible. This will raise the standard for files of this type, for example, if one was to search for a “sketch effect” and he or she saw two options: a file with one project, and a file with three projects and a preset, that person would probably buy the option with more to offer. I think the next “big thing” on VH is going to be files that included more than just one thing, files that have a combination of graphics, templates and footage.

I’m not really the most experienced (far from it haha) but that’s my suggestion. Good Luck

Thanks, guys! Your feedback has certainly helped! My takeaway from it is that it would be worth building into part of a larger theme as opposed to essentially just one tool. I’ll work on it and have another run at it in the near future!
