@beetlesales I would love to find that on a box of dry ice :D. I think professionalism is important, but for me that means providing customers with what they want, and be serious about what I do. But I also want to be friendly, make them feel like they’re asking one of their buddies for help. How many times did you get a helpful reply to your support question from a big company? For me, none. Instead, I always found help on forums, from people just like you and me.

@novalex – your attitude is correct, but you must know that here are some customers who do not apreciate being friendly. i found them. trust me, it’s better to leave them without jokes. [ imi dau seama ca suntem pe aceiasi lungime de unda, dar nu toata lumea e ca la noi :) ]

I completely agree. However, you have to admit the entire concept behind a help document is for users to receive professional, straightforward support for their purchase. I just feel humor would negate what you’re ultimately trying to achieve.

@duotive I can only hope customers who do not appreciate me being friendly have a sense of humor, or at least don’t get offended. I will, of course, be completely professional to them. After all, I must adapt to my customers, not vice-versa.

@beetlesales I see your point. That’s my objective, after all, to help the user. However, I only joke in parts of the documentation that don’t really need explaining. For example, on the list of all HTML files and what they contain, I put this little gem:
tables.html – tables, Data Tables and unicorns (not really)

What I’m saying here is that the customer will absolutely get the help he is looking for, but with a joke or two sprinkled around, in the hopes that it’ll ease their frustration with the problem they’re having.

No, I have nothing against humor :)

Oh, and if that’s your source (livejournal.com) for a legitimate pants tag that says that, then you have absolutely NO believable argument.

Well as we all know, nobody reads the support docs anyway ;)

Well how about some customer to contact me just for my joke in the documentation, he reminded me that I advertised my “template for lumberjacks” and he :)
