There seems to be a geographical dependency here. Central and eastern Europe appear to be ruled by PC and the west + America looks more fond of Mac. Cannot say of Asia. That’s a very loose statement of course so don’t draw the guns out. :)

I’d add that 3D folks tend to opt for PC, whereas more pure design orientated folks tend to go with Mac. Mac’s mainstay was always in print design, spreading out later to multimedia and animation. The compositing world is a bit split (with a pretty big Linux contingent too). Anything slick and advertisingy (agencies etc.) is always Mac.

I think that where there’s money, there’s Mac. I’d argue that it is a superior product (from the operating system, product design and pace of development at least). But I’d also say that it’s something of a luxury product. The price can’t be explained away simply in terms of the high quality components. Look at the price they charge you for a Hitachi hard-drive – or some RAM . Way over the odds. These are standard components with an Apple sticker slapped on.

But I repeat… you’re paying for the design and development and I personally don’t begrudge that (until I have to buy a new machine, that is) :-)

Absolutely agree with you felt!

I can’t imagine myself doing complex 3D on a Mac, its too limited in terms of upgrades. Apart from the Apple’s high price tag, there’s an other problem. They don’t have a workstation powerful enough to meet the demands of large studios. Most animation, visual effects studios work on HP Workstations since they are very customizable and can get very serious!

I’m with Vaynah on the question of ‘if PCs and Macs were priced the same, would you get a Mac?’

I know people who would refuse Mac if it costs as PC :-]
