Hey guys,
It’s official: ActiveDen is going to start selling Unity 3d assets. For those of you not familiar with Unity, it’s awesome. It’s a free (for the basic version) and easy to use game development tool that allows you (or is about to allow you) to develop for the web, PC, xBox,wii, iPhone, iPad, Android, and anything I’ve missed.
Check it out: http://unity3d.com/ Here are some web demos: http://unity3d.com/gallery/
What types of files will we sell? Basically, anything a Unity game developer may need, including scripts, scenes, objects, and characters. So, what’s the difference between a static 3d model and a Unity scene? Let’s use this file as an example: http://3docean.net/item/2-low-polygonal-ships/74962 Yes, you can just pull that one right into Unity, but that doesn’t make it something you’d be able to sell on AD. If you want to sell that on AD you’d need to include animated water, a skybox, ocean sounds, make the boat rock a little, add lighting, creating functional doors, make the cannons functional, and maybe even add some seagulls hovering overhead. You’d also need to give it all the needed physics attributes so the character doesn’t just fall into nothing. It’ll get accepted into the Unity category once it’s something a developer could throw right in his game. Another great file would be a first person shooter setup. Yes, there’s already one that comes with Unity, but you can’t actually shoot anything with it. Also, there’s no crouching, going prone, or leaning. The possibilities are truly endless.
I’ll post more details on this later, but we’ll be hiring a Unity reviewer very soon. If you’re interested, get your portfolio ready.
We also your great content. If you’re an expert Unity dev, shoot me an email for details on seed content. Be the first to upload to this category!
I’d also love to hear your suggestions on how to make this category the most useful to you! What sub categories would you like to see? What types of files would you create? What types would you buy? What resources would you like to see from us to help your Unity authoring process? Would you like to see tutorials on ActiveTuts and CGTuts?
