e.g. this one

Possible solution (or mitigation) ... if a thread is older than a certain age, when someone clicks a “Reply” have an intermediate pop-up warning “You are posting to a thread that has been inactive for xx months: Continue [Yes] / [No]”

Sometimes it’s useful to bring old threads, which many people didn’t seen, back though. And in this example, I think he new of the old-ness.

Yeah, he just wanted to know who won the comp.

Anyway, it would be a good idea to color older thread red or gray to make it more obvious.

Those always make me laugh a little, but I think I’ve done it too. It seems like a lot of forums out there automatically lock posts that are a certain age. Is that going too far?

And I’m not suggesting preventing resurrecting old threads .. just adding an intermediate check to make sure the poster intends to resurrect it. It may make sense to use an old thread to ask for information about a problem that has been posted before but I doubt that the noob who resurrected a 2-year old game contest thread with the message :

“i dont know how to make games”

had a clue that the contest was long over. Personally I don’t know why anyone would post such a reply to that thread even if the contest was current .. probably some sort of troll ;)

Not the noob who resurrected it. That was a follow up question.

Since most such resurrections are done by noobs they probably wouldn’t be aware of the color code. A simple intermediate dialog would prevent noobs (and not-so-noobs) from making fools of themselves on ancient threads but still allow dead-thread resurrection when appropriate.
