I also have this doubt of going with thumbs all the same or unique ones for each file, I like the idea of marketing and same base thumb for all items but for example a wordpress theme might get more attention with a “related to file” thumb, at least some users say so.

Personally I’ve always favored unique thumbs that somehow represent the file – it makes homepage exposure worth more and works well when you make a grid of thumbnails on your profile or personal website. You could brand them with an icon in a corner or something like that, but I wouldn’t go with exactly the same image for all files – just my personal opinion though
