Hey guys, what’s up in the Jungle?

I’d like to give a go at creating some sound, and I’m basically going to start from scratch…can you guys suggest a good tool for newbies to start up with. This is primarily to make some tunes for my new site template, nothing too crazy…

Thanks in advance ;-)

I take it you are not going to record audio..? Stuff that comes into mind are Reason, Acid, Fruity Loops. I’m not sure about the current status of Acid and FL, but Reason should contain everything you need. From sampled ‘real’ instruments, to crazy synths and good quality stuff for processing/mixing/mastering. A decent MIDI keyboard are worth having, but not required.

Depends what you want and how much yo want to invest.
The easiest way is getting Fruity Loops Demo:
http://flstudio.image-line.com/documents/download.html
The demo version can export the audio file that you make, the only limitation is that you can’t save in FL format.
If you want to keep it low budget, you can try the Mu.Lab Free, it’s a totally free (not demo, not limited in time).
http://www.mutools.com/products.html
If you want to invest some money, then Reason (previously mentioned) would be the best solution.

If you have a Mac you can try Logic Pro. It works as well as its name implies. Sophisticated logic for pro audio production.

edit

I just realized the criteria of this thread and the suggestion I made. Logic Pro is for advanced users, and might not be worth getting if you are only going to mess around with it.

Ableton and Pro Tools are good, but I’m a fan of freeware.
Who can beat that price ? Mu.Lab is:
1 – Free
2 – Fully modular (like Reson)
3 – Works under Windows, Mac os and Linux
