genm saidWhat sort of tutorials are you looking for?
I would love to be buying up a ton of tuts, but I just dont find many in the style I want to learn : (That would be great if we had here little “suggest a product” page where users can post short info what they looking for. Something like twitter but for several users. Than anyone could collect these ideas like bookmarks and create collections to have easy access to what they want to work on. If some1 come across idea which they like they could rate it same way as we rate products, that will indicate how good is that idea and if it’s worth to consider development.
Anyone will benefit on that. Start from Envato, Authors and ending on happy Customers!
Well, any tools that would indicate what tutorials people want, would be great.
I actually made a separate thread about this, asking what Photoshop tutorials people would like, exactly because I’m not sure what people are interested in these days (my tutorial reading days are practically over).
Some way to get a hint of what people want, would definitely be great.

for me the tuts marketplace failed miserable when it was allowed to upload tutorials that are available anyway if you pay the 9$ a moth on the tuts plus network.
For 9$ a month you get 98% (? ) of all items from the tuts marketplace.
It is bad marketing, a big mistake and is showing up, the “on sale” promotion will not fix the issue. I looked for half an hour at tutorials on sale and each one I checked was available as article on the tuts network.
I’m not discussing the quality of the items, have nothing to say against that, they are very good, the point is that the marketplace needs exclusive, original, not available anywhere else, tutorials.

While I agree with your point completely, you are exaggerating the issue insanely. Over 50% of the items on Tuts+ Marketplace are not available through the monthly sub, and are exclusive.
All the Tutorial sites from Envato have in total 439 files on the marketplace. There is a total of 926 items on the marketplace. Hence, Envato makes out around 47% of the items on the marketplace. That’s pretty far from your alleged 98%.
Now don’t get me wrong, I agree with your point. But exaggerating things far beyond reality doesn’t help anyone.

yes you right I don’t have the numbers to figure out the exact percentage, I exaggerated and I got caught
marketplace has 926 items and tuts network has 630 exclusive tutorials but I don’t know how much of those are on the marketplace. I searched for exclusive tutorials for a half an hour and I didn’t found any, so my impression was that.

Well granted, I don’t know how many are “exclusive” or how many can be bought on other sites too. When I said “exclusive” I meant tutorials that aren’t on the tutorial websites. I counted all the tutorials on the Tuts+ that is submitted by Envato (like “PsdPremium” for example), and removed that total from the total amount of files on the site.
Just take a look at the top selling files, and top selling authors. Most files can only be gotten on Tuts+ marketplace.
I don’t get at all how you CAN ’T find those tutorials! You’re looking at http://marketplace.tutsplus.com/ right? o0

Actually, I love that I have different options: either pay a monthly membership, or, purchase tuts “a la cart”. I don’t need tutorials on a monthly basis so it would be a waste of money for me to pay every month for something I won’t even use.
For example, a year long membership if paying $9/mo is $104 per year. Since tuts plus opened shop, I’ve only used 6 or 7 tuts. Doing the math shows that I’d be tossing money away if I signed up for a membership. I think it’s a great idea to offer individual tuts for sale.

Jami hit the nail on the head. I can’t even count how many support tickets we got before the Tuts+ Marketplace opened up with users who don’t want a subscription but were very interested in buying a single tutorial.
I really think it’s been a huge success and from what I’ve seen the numbers from this sale have been great too.

making a managerial mistake is human and understandable, after all, in many cases the way envato creates business was and still is, innovative and new, it can’t get everything right each time.
but persevereting is stupid.
If the two option for payment is a success as you said then why not extending it to all the other marketplaces? Who needs to buy a wordpress theme can purchase it like it is now, or he can just pay a fee each month and get all the wordpress he want from all marketplace.
Who contacted you asked for a way to directly buy the tutorials were they were on the tuts network, they did not asked for a tuts marketplace. I think is a big difference. The tuts network publish a tutorial, people either pay a subscription or get access on the fly by paying some amount for that particular tutorial.
A marketplace instead obligates the same buyer to a)pay an additional 2$ fee if he wants to buy a particular tutorial or b) makes a deposit that is higher than the actual month subscription.
It is clear than who stops 2 seconds to think the most obvious solution is to buy the 9$ option. And this off course is not a bad thing for tuts network who can continue to exist and prosper.
