I don’t upload much to Flashden but, but when I do I am overcome by a strange impulse to go look at my “Upload” page frequently to see how it’s progressing in the queue. One method I have evolved for coping with this kind of obsessive behavior is to figure out a way to make my even more obsessive penchant for Flash development do the work for me .. so I wrote a script to check the page for me.

No frills, it just displays some undecorated text fields and updates it at regular intervals.

If anyone else shares my obsession and wants to use it, or decorate with a nice user interface where you can change the poll time, etc you can get the code (AS3 only) here.

Ignore the fact that the syntax highlighting gets screwed up a quarter of the way down .. Pastie does not seem to handle declararion of regular expressions properly when they include a single quotation mark.

Please share with everyone if you stick a nice user interface on it.

From the pastie link

// Set up timer to reload at regular intervals (keep it to 1 minute minimum – // you dont want to be accused of a DoS attack on Flashden :)

that’s right, you don’t. stern glances all round

Is one minute okay? I just sucked that number out of my thumb. :) (Yeah .. for those who recognize that colloquialism, I spent a good few years in the land of the boere ;) )

Will this functionality be available in the proposed API ?

Die land van die boere is beter… sommer baie beter (as enige iets wat jy al voorheen beleef het)!

With regards to that interval – I would set it to like 30 minutes or even an hour…

Also, I wouldn’t bother with something like that if you don’t have an overlapping timezone. Living in South Africa, when I wake up, the Aussies are asleep and vice versa. I just wait patiently for my email to arrive. :) Usually waiting for me the next morning.

Good work though.

Once per minute shouldn’t break anything. We’d probably prefer something around the 5 – 15 minute mark. Realistically files can only be reviewed so quickly so you won’t miss anything on a lower time frame.

Ryan’s taking care of the API and it’s very much up in the air, so I’d hate to commit to anything until it’s finished.
