In order to begin any project I do, I look for an inspiration. Its what motivates me to do better and to achieve the best results.
Considering I mostly post audio tracks on audiojungle, I look for a musical inspiration. My personal all-time inspiration is the producer/singer Timbaland, aka The King of Beats. I’m a personal fan of very upbeat music. No matter how slow the song, I believe it needs a good beat, something Timbaland achieves flawlessly.
Enough publicizing Timbaland, but who/what is your inspiration? Just curious as to what drives our envato users.

I have two main musical influences. First, is the Donnie Darko soundtrack by Michael Andrews. If you’ve never seen the movie or never heard the soundtrack, please, check it out some time. It’s ethereal, it’s fragile, it’s beautiful, it just takes me to another place every time I listen to it.
Donnie Darko Soundtrack by Michael Andrews
My second major influence is an artist called theflashbulb. I’d describe his music as IDM , but it goes beyond that for me. It’s creative, compelling, and it’s such a journey of emotions and feelings as no two tracks are ever the same. One minute your brain is exploding through the pure genius of a totally glitched-out and fast-paced track, and the next minute you find such beauty in the warm embers of electronic harmonies. I have never ever heard anything so consistently moving and creative from one producer/artist before. Please take the time to check out theflashbulb. The album “Kirlian Selections” is an impeccable album to begin with:

Hey
i Grew up in the 80’s this is probably why i have been inspired a lot by Synth groups and Breakdance stuff. Later i listened to all sorts of Punk and New Wave, followed by EBM and Industrial stuff and lately more into Neodub and Dancefllor stuff.
A group which combines all of this and absolutely blew me away when seeing them live was DUB TRIO . Check some of their stuff on youtube.
Favourite one : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pf5qvSFNiqQ&feature=related
Dont be missleaded by the intro of the song and go trough the whole track
Cheers Daniel

I must admit I had never heard of Dub Trio, Daniel. I just checked out the track/link you posted and I really like it! I’m in the iTunes store right now seeing what tracks of theirs I want to buy, nice recommendation!
Great thread, DarkSunz!
What’s everyone else’s inspiration, influences and recommendations?
There’s a few albums that I listen to that I refer to for various reasons. For rock I reference a fairly new album: Paramore-Riot. I love the songs but it’s more for intensity and a great mix.
One of my favorite albums of all time is: Yes-Fragile. I’m a progressive rocker at heart but it’s more my listening preference than the kind of music I like to write. If you put that album on in some good head phones and just kick back and take in it you’ll be amazed by what they were doing in the studio in the early 70’s. Some day I’m going to sit down and put together a 10 minute thing like that. The way they take a piano chord and reverse it and fade it in for the opening of Roundabout is intense. The music and the attention to detail in the recording and mixing is top notch. I’m sure you all have that album you can always listen to? That’s mine. Oh yeah and the Bass sound on that album is the best ever, a Rickenbacker.
Check out Medeski, Martin & Wood: It’s a Jungle in Here. Genius. That’s all I need to say. It’s out there Jazz stuff. Just crazy, and any musician can appreciate the madness.
There’s more I can go on for days. Maybe later I’ll put down some more.

Thanks Scott, really means alot when someone of your stature comments a newbie!
I must say I definitely agree with you there Scott, thanks for the GREAT track Daniel. And as for the artist Flashbulb, truly remarkable. Clearly shows how much I dont know about many of the artists.
I also wanted to add Yanni as on of my inspirations. Not many people appreciate his work but I think he has a way with music. I always takes me places, very soothing classical music. In reality, Im a RnB/Hip-Hop/Rap loving guy, but I REALLY love soothing music, and Yanni has quite a few.

These two pieces are truly marvelous, and a must hear for anyone who appreciates soothing music

Hello Scott / DarkSunz
glad you agreed on Dub Trio. I had goosebumps during the whole liveset when they played last year here in Switzerland. Thought it would not be possible having only 3 people on stage and playing that stuff as tight and massive like on CD ( without playback stuff exept some funny samples ). No fancy lightshows, merchandising, marshall towers etc. JUST GOOD MUSIC
( p.s. the drummer is a maniac )

@Scott – That soundtrack is fantastic and that cover of “mad world” is amazing but it always puts me in the saddest mood

I never heard of this artist, but after I watch the link you gave us, I fall in love. I’m currently digging youtube to see more of the Flashbulb. thanks Scott!
Sounds lame, but my biggest “inspiration” is the utter lack of free time I have to do anything creative. By the time I scrape together a couple of hours to get into the studio, I’m aching so bad to play music that I’m ready to burst.
I’ve heard it said by somebody or other that it was a shame that T.S. Eliot had to spend so much time as a bank clerk when he could have been producing more poems, but maybe that’s what he had to go through to produce his genius when he could get around to it…
But I digress from the spirit of the thread. I’m more acoustic based – what’s influenced me the most lately is the Avett Brothers Emotionalism and Four Thieves Gone albums (not so big on their newest one yet). I absolutely love the honesty of the music and the lyrics.
I don’t think I’ve heard of any of the other stuff mentioned in this thread, with the exception of the Donnie Darko soundtrack. I agree – I guess I missed “Mad World” when Tears for Fears did it but the Gary Jules cover is really, really well done.
