Custom XML News Reader (AS3)

Is there any way to imbed links within the news text, or do they have to be placed at the bottom?

saramoira – Yes, it would be possible… you first would need to go into the ‘NewsItem’ movie clip and select the 2 textfields that hold the copy and in the properties panel, set them to be html enabled. Then in the ActionScript of the main movie clip you would need to find every place where the text is being set from “.text = *” to “.htmlText = *” (sorry I’m not more descriptive, but I’m not in front of my file right now to tell you the exact teminology that I used.) There should be 4 places to change… 2 textfield to change when the NewItems are being created, and 2 to change in the resize handler function.

Lastly, you would then need to wrap your text for the copy (in your xml file) in html tags appropriately… and make links that way with tags.

That should work… like I said I’m not in front of my file to test it out, but in theory that should be all you need to do.

Hi. First, good job.

In view of the preview, I decided to buy your application because I work mainly with AS3 .

But what a hassle to see the code in the FLA file !

Why not have developed the code in independent classes ?

In fact, I need to customize the application and in all honesty, I must say that this is the boat with regard to the code and understanding …

I will have to spend time organizing when I thought win by buying the file.

One final comment, the file is a bit too heavy for this kind of application. There are means of optimizing the whole.

However, there are unique compared to other similar application.

@Rockntrek – I appreciated your comments and your purchase. I understand if you think the code is a little much and not the most streamlined… If I were to code this file today, I would have done it a lot differently as I’ve grown alot as a programmer. But, it wouldn’t be worth it for me to re-write the code for the few people that want to completely customize it.

As for using independant classes, I normally keep most of my code within the .fla file, besides custom event listeners and a few other instances. From viewing comments from a lot of buyers, it seems to me that the majority of them like having the code contained within the .fla… but, I usually do whatever makes the most sense for my projects.

Anyways, I hope you can still make use of the product and are able to customize it to your needs. I appreciate the purchase!

After a night’s work, I managed to organize the code in classes.

Frankly, as a developer is much more convenient to have an overview of the code in this way.

Any wish of 2 files, one for the news and the other for the scroller.

Now it’s time to develop the back office which will modify the xml file.

Congratulations, it is a real beautiful component. Just a question: Is it any any way to get rid off the pic? In my case there are some news with a pic and some other without any. Unfortunately, when I erase the pic attribute from the xml file, remains the square-frame. Do you have any suggestions?

FILE UPDATE [08/21/09] – You now have the option to not have an image for the news items you choose. Just leave the PIC tag empty in the xml file

is it possible to set the component to automatically close the item while the other is being opened? otherwise it gets to big and confusing

Just made a purchase.. great app. Really clean coding.

Have a few issues: 1. like @livingxdead i have a huge gap between the news item’s date/heading and content after removing the link to include an image.

2. the color for the content – “copy_color” is not registering any alternative color besides the default black.

Well, based on trial and error… it seems like setting scalable to false ..seems to lead to the problem - with reference to issue #1.

I purchased your file and I am happy with it.

I am using it on my flash site and when I import the swf file it works fine, just the scroller bar shows up on the left side rather than on the right like in the html sample file ..!!!?

Any ideas of why it is happening?

Thanks very much for getting back to me. That problem was solved by changing the enter full scale mode to FALSE . ..no idea why!? as long it worked…

Now, I am problem loading the news swf file into my main fla file.

It does load and displays when I publish the file but I get this error message on the output panel:

TypeError: Error #1009: Cannot access a property or method of a null object reference. at preview_fla::MainTimeline/frame1()

Although it displays when I publish my main file, it doesn’t display at all when I upload the site on my server.

Any ideas of why it is happening!?
