Can the number of thumbnails be modified?
Yes. From XML it can be defined.
I Don’t really need the background. Can I remove/change it?
Yes, You can. The gallery is a MovieClip, which is without the background. In the preview (and also in the the example in download), the background is kept on the root timeline, where gallery is placed as a movieClip.
(Same is true for the color buttons and fullScreen toggle button).
In Simple terms – Gallery is basically the thumbs, categories, title, navigation and bigger view of the image. Whereas the background, color btns and full screen buttons are on main timeline.
How many thumbs can it load?
I have tested it with 600 Thumbs and there was no problem of performance/memory usage on a Win XP Machine with 2 GB RAM .
