Hi there, I have a question. I just bought your preloader, and I’m trying to figure out how this works. How do I attach it to an existing flash file? Also, what exactly the package includes. I’m not sure if I have everything. Thanks!

Hi Milencheto,

You should have received a readme.txt, p1.jpg, p2.jpg, preloader.fla, and i think also rhysworks-yellowhoriz.swf and rhysworks-yellowhoriz.swf.html. If they’re not in there, I would suggest re-downloading the file or contacting Envato support (though the important thing really is the preloader.fla, do you have that?)

It would helpful if I knew a little more about your set up, do you have Flash? (i.e. are you trying to apply the preloader straight to your Flash timeline from within a project?) or are you trying to attach the preloader externally?

If the former, the idea is that the preloader works as MovieClip which you can drop onto the first frame of your timeline. Then, the rest of your Flash stuff goes on any additional frames (this should be illustrated in the jpegs). The preloader then attempts to preload its parent, which should be the rest of your stage.

Hope this helps, if not feel free to get back to me :)

Thanks for your reply. Yes, I have Flash CS4 , and yes I tried to apply the preloader to my Flash timeline. The problem is that my first frame is actually my project. How do I insert another frame before the existing one? I’m not very good with Flash, so I would appreciate some help on this. thanks again

Milencheto,

I thought one of the quickest and clearest ways to answer a question like this would be to show you, so I uploaded a video to Youtube which briefly describes the process: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bQXxlh4zhQY

Youtube botched the quality a bit, but i think it’s just about ok, just remember to turn to 420p view in the pop out.

I hope that suitably answers your question – if you have any other queries then feel free to get back to me :)

Hi R.,

Thanks a lot for the great video tutorial. I did exactly as you showed in your video, but at the end I got a whole bunch of error messages (16 to be exact) such as: 1) 1120: Access of undefined property onEnterFrame. 2) 1120: Access of undefined property bytesIn. 3) 1120: Access of undefined property _root. 4) 1120: Access of undefined property total. 5) Warning: 1058: Migration issue: The property _root is no longer supported. This property has been removed. The closest equivalent is the Stage, which serves as the root of the ActionScript 3.0 display list.. and so on…

I don’t know what is that I’m missing. May be just my flash project and your preloader don’t work well together, or I don’t know if this is from importance but when I drop your preloader MovieClip onto my stage (first frame, preloader layer) I can still see it on a top of my project (second frame). Is this the way it’s supposed to be? Any thoughts?

Thanks a lot for your help!

Milencheto,

Sounds a lot to me like you’re using AS3 in your project? My preloader is an AS2 preloader, hence they don’t play well together. I’m pretty sure that’s the problem.

If you like I can give you some AS3 replacement code instead (though not sure if there isn’t some rule about giving out stuff on the comments, will have to check).

Also yes, you should still see it on top of your project on the second frame – if we deleted it off here then the preloader wouldn’t get any time to ‘fade out’ like it does.

R.,

Yes, that’s exactly what I was thinking. I’m using AS3 for my project. My mistake, now when I checked again your description for the preloader I noticed that it is AS2 . It would be great if you could give me some AS3 replacement code, I would appreciate it a lot, but if it’s against the regulations of the web site I will understand. You have been more than helpful. Thanks a lot!

Milencheto,

I’ve been advised to send the code to you privately – i’m not aware of PM function within the site, so is there somewhere i can send it?
