XML Slide Show with Auto Delay - AS3

I guess another way to ask the same question is what is the best way to change what XML sheet is loaded by the slide show?

You’ll have to embed the swf into your html page multiple times. The index.html that you’ll have downloaded will only do this once, but you should be able to use it as a guide.

You’ll have to create a copy of the xml file the component uses, and change its name, then pass the new xml file path into the second embeded component using the flash vars facility provided in the index.html.

In this way you can have different content in both slideshows on the same page using the same swf.

Hey Donagh, I’m using this as a video slide show and it’s working very nicely. Couple questions for you:

I can’t figure out in the .fla how to move the numbers on the bottom to the right side of the movie. Is there a way to do this in the AS?

Is there a way to make the selected swf slide reload or start from the first frame if you’ve clicked on another slide and then go back to the original?

When I attempt to put the SWF on a webpage when the webpage is being opened the swif takes up the whole page right away. And Im not sure why? Any help?

• To move the buttons, look for slide button holder on line 66. You can change its x and y position there relative to the slideshow background size.

• To make your swf start again, you could insert some code into the slide button click function, to tell the loaded swf asset togoToAndPlay(0) each time its slide is selected.

Your problem nothing to do with the slide show component. The errors are in your html/css/swfObject set up. (Possibly your div is set to a height of 100%.) Unfortunately I cannot provide support for such issues.

The index.html includes a cross browser compatible solution for embedding the slideshow in a html/Css page using swfObject and specifying the xml path of its content. Please refer to this example when embedding the slide show in other html pages.

Sorry not to sound like a total idiot but I can get the slide show to play the alternate content with the index and a new xml fine as you have suggested. How do I get the slide show from the index file into my HTML page. The only way I was able to get it to happen it appeared directly in the middle of the page. I would like it to appear within a div with content on the left hand side of the screen.

Any help would be great! Thank you so MUCH ! Anton

The slideshow currently plays within a div in the index.html file. The CSS in the head section of the index.html file centers the div in the browser. If you position your div correctly in the other html page, as you would normally do. Then transfer the swf object javascript section of the index.html file over, leaving the centering CSS behind.

At the moment the size of the slide show is specified through the xml. So if you wished to make this fullscreen that part of the code would definitely have to be changed to auto resize with the resizing of the stage(browser). Thats off the top of my head, there may be more.

Hi Donagh,

Great component. I wonder if you could help me with a couple of issues.

I have customised the swf so that it works perfectly for us however I want to load it into a ‘UlLoader’ in the centre of my flash page. When I do so it becomes resized even though the loader component is the same size as the slideshow swf and furthermore the thumbnails now line up to the webpage holding the slideshow rather than the slideshow itself. Is there a way around this?

The slideshow is set up to take its xml path through the flash vars in html file. and the size of the slideshow is set up in the xml. This size is what other elements use to reposition themselves relatively. So check these things again first.

You could try to wrap the whole slideshow in an ADDED _TO_STAGE event, just incase the slideshow is initilising too early before its fully loaded.

From your comment alone, I don’t fully understand whats not workng and what is. If none of these solve your problem, you will have to send me an email with screen shots and let me know what you have changed.

To disable the caption simply leave all of the caption fields empty in the xml file. Not the attributes, just the tags. (don’t delete the tags either). To prevent the link button from showing simply leave the link tag blank also.

The component was not designed for each image to act as a link, this is why there was a link option in each caption.

If you are not using the caption at all, and instead wish to change it so that the image becomes a link (its either or, they won’t work together), send me an email with your file and I can add the code for you. (email me through my FD profile form and I’ll reply, then you can send me an attchement.)

• This can easily be integrated into an existing flash project. I’m also here to help if you encounter any problems.

• Yes it is possible to have the numbers below the images, simply by changing a couple of values in the code.

• Yes the images can be any size, if they are larger than the width and height of the shodeshow, as set in the xml, then they will be hidden by the mask and the top left corner will line up with the top left corner of the slideshow.

I have a couple of questions:

In the XML file, when I specify the media to be a “swf” and place the swf in the file path an Error is thrown. How do I get external swfs to play in a slide?

I’d also like to be able to have control over the time duration from one slide to the next. For example, I have a img on the first slide, that goes to the next slide that contains a swf files, I’d like the entire swf file to finish before moving on to the next slide. While my swf is playing there will be no captions, so how can I account for time in this instance.

Lastly, can I change the position of the buttons to be on the left side of the movie, vertically scrolling?

• That’s all you need to do to load an swf. Something else must be wrong. Send me the error, either paste it into an email or send me a screenshot.

• If you are not using the captions, then unfortunately the only time delay option available to you is the one time for all slides option. A possible alternative would be to use the captions, but to give the text a fill color opacity of 100%, making them invisible. Then set the minimum delay for the normal slides, leaving the caption blank, and for the longer slides, control the delay with the number of invisible words! Not ideal, but would probably work.

• Changing the buttons to work as you request would have to be done as a custom modiication, because of the time involved in such a change.
